Al Ain: FC Seoul striker Adriano was named top scorer as the 2016 AFC Champions League concluded on Saturday evening with the Brazilian’s total of 13 goals for the K League Classic side unmatched at the end of the 2016 edition of the continental competition.
Adriano’s scoring spree began in explosive fashion form the very first group stage game when the 29-year-old netted an extraordinary four goals in the 6-0 win over Thailand’s Buriram United.
The former Dalian Shide forward continued to lay waste to the defences of the Group F sides as he fired home a hat-trick against Japan’s Sanfrecce Hiroshima before netting a brace against Shandong Luneng of China.
A goal on Matchday Six, albeit in a losing effort away in Hiroshima, gave him a stunning total of 10 goals from the group stage.
The Brazilian then hit the net against Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds in the Round of 16 in a rollercoaster 2-2 aggregate draw that needed a penalty shootout to separate the teams.
And Adriano was also on target against Shandong, in a return meeting in the quarter-finals, as FC Seoul prevailed 4-2 on aggregate over the Jinan-based side.
Despite scoring his 13th goal of the competition to match the total of single-tournament record holder Muriqui of Guangzhou Evegrande set in 2013, Adriano was unable to prevent FC Seoul’s semi-final exit at the hands of eventual winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
