Al Ain: Al Ain captain Omar Abdulrahman was named the 2016 AFC Champions League’s Most Valuable Player, but the individual accolade did little to soothe the pain of losing in Saturday’s final of the continental club championship.
Abulrahman’s side were held to a 1-1 draw in the second leg in front of their own fans at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium by Korea Republic’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, who claimed the title with a 3-2 aggregate win.
The result deprived Al Ain of a second AFC Champions League to add to the inaugural title club claimed in 2003, but the club from the United Arab Emirates will be able to console themselves with Abdulrahman’s personal title.
“I want to tell the fans I’m sorry about the result and I hope they will support us like they did today, with a full stadium,” said Abdulrahman. “We promise them we will fight in every competition, for the AFC Champions League, in the domestic league, the cup and everything.”
