Dhaka: A brace inside the final 20 minutes from forward Mauro Olivi helped Malaysia’s Selangor FA claim a thrilling 4-3 victory over Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club of Bangladesh in Group E of the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
Hosts Sheikh Jamal took the lead at Bangabandhu National Stadium through Landing Darboe only for Patrick Wleh to level the scores before half-time and Gopinathan Ramachandra to put the visitors in front in the 53rd minute.
And after quick-fire goals from Sheikh Jamal’s Emeka Onuoha and Wedson Anselme, Argentinean Olivi scored twice in the final 20 minutes as Selangor recorded their first win of the campaign.
"I’m happy to get three points because it was important to keep us running in the AFC Cup," said Selangor coach Zainal Abidin Hassan.
"We made a lot of mistakes and were punished by Sheikh Jamal. We didn’t produce our normal game because we were under pressure.
"But the players fought back twice when they were down and that is the one good thing about today’s match. We worked very hard and our mission was to keep our campaign alive."
Sheikh Jamal opened the scoring on 29 minutes through Gambian Darboe’s low strike from distance before Liberian Wleh headed in Olivi’s cross six minutes from half-time to equalise for Selangor.
And the visitors then went in front eight minutes after the restart when Ramachandra neatly toe-poked Wleh’s cross into the back of the net.
Nigerian Onuoha nodded the host’s level on 65 minutes before Sheikh Jamal then went in front a minute later when Anselme finished clinically after a fine solo move.
But Selangor hit back once more when Olivi equalised with 20 minutes remaining before a mistake from goalkeeper Sahidul Alam allowed the Argentinean to score the winner in the 83rd minute.
"We have lost the match not due to any tactical failures, rather due to individual mistakes," said Sheikh Jamal coach Shafiqul Islam Manik.
"I had hopes on my forwards and they delivered. But the defenders and the goalkeeper played sloppy football.
"The positive side is that they tried to score till the end of the match. It could have ended 4-4."
