Statement by AFC President on bombing at football stadium in Iskanderiyah, Iraq

It is with deep sorrow that I have learnt about the terrible tragedy at a football match on Friday in Iskanderiyah, Iraq. On behalf of the Asian Football Confederation and the Asian football family I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victims, the injured and their families, as well as the Iraq Football Association.

Football is a powerful force for good and our game has a long history of bringing people together even during conflicts around the world. Using football and sport stadiums as a stage for these heinous acts of violence is a cowardly, completely unjust and indiscriminate act.

The Asian football family will stand united and our thoughts and prayers are with all affected at this difficult time.
