Sydney: With the AFC Asian Cup 2015 Australia kicking off on Friday, join the-afc.com as we take you around the venues where the drama of Asia’s premier tournament is set to unfold.
Stadium Australia
Location: Sydney, New South Wales
Capacity: 84,000
Scheduling: Four group stage matches, a quarter-final, semi-final and the final
Purpose-built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the stadium was officially opened in June 1999 when Australia played the FIFA World Stars. The stadium has since hosted a number of Socceroos internationals – none more memorable than Australia versus Uruguay in November 2005, when a John Aloisi penalty goal secured the Australians a place at the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 1974. That remains one of the greatest moments in Australian sport.
An important centre for national and international events, Stadium Australia has a capacity of 84,000. The stadium is environmentally sustainable. Design features include ventilation and natural cooling and heating. Rainwater is recycled from the roof to irrigate the pitch.
The Stadium is within Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush Bay, 14 kilometres from the Sydney CBD.
Since its opening in 1999 the stadium has assumed the role of Sydney’s major event venue with most major games across the four football codes played at the stadium.
