Pyongyang: Jong Il-gwan was DPR Korea’s match-winner for the second time in Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2018/AFC Asian Cup 2019 joint-qualifiers as the Rimyongsu striker struck a first-half penalty to give the Chollima a narrow 1-0 win over Yemen on Tuesday.
The 2010 AFC Youth Player of the Year scored the only goal of the game at the Kim Il-sung Stadium in the 12th minute, successfully converting from the spot to score his second of the qualifiers after his goal gave the North Koreans a 1-0 away win over Bahrain on Match Day 3.
DPR Korea’s defeat of a resilient Yemen side took their points tally to 13 after five matches played, with last week’s surprise goalless draw at home against the Philippines the only blot in the two-time FIFA World Cup qualifiers’ copy book.
The group winners and four best runners-up (total 12 teams) will advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals and the final round of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The next best 24 teams from the preliminary stage of the joint qualifiers will compete in a separate competition for the remaining slots (12 slots or 11 slots + 1 slot for the host) in the 24-team 2019 Asian Cup.
