Ashgabat: India remain without a point in Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifiers after the six-time South Asian champions went down 2-1 to Turkmenistan on Thursday.
Guvanch Abylov put the Turkmen 1-0 up with just nine minutes at the Kopetdag Stadium played and while Jeje Lalpekhlua drew India level in the 29th minute, Arslanmyrat Amanov netted the winner on the hour mark as Stephen Constentine’s side went down 2-1 for the third successive time in the qualifiers following defeats by an identical scoreline at home to Oman and away to Guam.
The group winners and four best runners-up (total 12 teams) will advance to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup finals and the final round of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The next best 24 teams from the preliminary stage of the joint qualifiers will compete in a separate competition for the remaining slots (12 slots or 11 slots + 1 slot for the host) in the 24-team 2019 Asian Cup.
