Abu Dhabi: Japan qualified for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 knockout phase on Sunday as Genki Haraguchi’s first-half penalty helped the Samurai Blue seal a narrow 1-0 win over Oman.
Japan's hard-fought victory saw Hajime Moriyasu’s charges record their second win of the campaign and guarantee the four-time champions of Asia a place in the Round of 16 alongside Uzbekistan who beat Turkmenistan to go top of Group F.
The result also meant Japan – excluding penalty shoot-outs – extended their record of only losing once in their last 30 games at the AFC Asian Cup Finals since being beaten by Saudi Arabia in the 2007 semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Oman must now beat Turkmenistan in their final group stage fixture to retain any hope of qualifying for the next round as one of the best third-place finishers.

Al Ain: Almoez Ali was the star of the show on Sunday afternoon as he scored four and set up a fifth in Qatar’s 6-0 defeat of DPR Korea as Felix Sanchez’s side moved to the top of the Group E standings and into the knockout stage of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.
The Al Duhail striker, now the tournament’s leading scorer with five goals in two games, shone as his partnership with Akram Afif down the left destroyed the DPR Korean defence repeatedly while Boualem Khoukhi and Abdelkarim Hassan also put their names on the scoresheet.
Victory means Sanchez’s side have secured themselves a top two finish in the group and their win also ensures Saudi Arabia will progress to the last 16. The teams face off on Thursday to determine who will top the group, with Qatar’s huge win meaning a draw in Abu Dhabi will be enough to take pole position.

Sharjah: Iraq, midfielder Bashar Resan Bonyan Iraq has proclaimed, are in a perfect place ahead of their AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Group D match against Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Lions of Mesopotamia produced another excellent display in the 3-0 win over Yemen on Saturday, setting themselves up nicely for a top-of-the-table meeting with Iran on Wednesday.
Goals from Mohanad Ali Kadhim and Resan, who plays his club football for Iranian giants Persepolis, gave the West Asians a 2-0 first half lead with Alaa Abbas’ late strike securing a comprehensive win for Iraq, who joined Iran at the top of the table on six points.

Dubai: Teamwork was the major reason for Saudi Arabia securing their second win in Group E of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, and Mohammed Al Burayk is hoping the Green Falcons maintain their fine form in their bid for a fourth Continental title.
After securing wins against DPR Korea and Lebanon, Saudi Arabia top Group E with six points and the knockout round is in sight, having failed to make it past the group stage in the past two editions.
Juan Antonio Pizzi's team defeated DPR Korea 4-0 on Matchday One and followed that up with a 2-0 triumph over Lebanon on Saturday.

Dubai: With nine scoreless matches in the green and gold behind him, Jamie Maclaren shared his relief at scoring his first international goal; one which the striker credits with setting the tone for Australia's 3-0 win over Palestine at Rashid Stadium on Friday.
The 25-year-old came into the crucial tie under pressure following Australia's 1-0 defeat to Jordan and a series of quiet displays for the national team, but he silenced his critics with a superb 18th-minute header which was followed by further goals to Awer Mabil and Apostolos Giannou in their AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Group B tie.
Maclaren told the-AFC.com the early goal made for a vastly different experience than the one endured against the Jordanians.

Al Ain: Paulo Bento was left frustrated by his team’s performance even as Korea Republic notched up a 1-0 win over Kyrgyz Republic that took the two-time champions into the knockout stage of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.
Kim Min-jae scored the only goal of a game Bento’s team dominated to ensure the Koreans join China in advancing to the Round of 16 from Group C. The two nations face off on Wednesday with top spot in the group on the line.
“We didn’t make a very good performance but I think that we won the game fairly,” said the Portuguese coach, who has now won five and drawn three of his first eight games in charge of the Taeguk Warriors.
“Even though we didn’t have a good performance we created a lot of opportunities to score and I think that we could have finished the game earlier. But with 1-0 the opponents have the hope to score and until the end we suffered a little bit because we didn’t score the second goal.”
