Dubai: Vietnam's Luong Xuan Truong has called on his side to achieve another historic milestone in Thursday's AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 quarter-final against Japan.
After squeezing into the knockout stage as the third-placed team in Group D, the Southeast Asians confounded pre-match predictions to beat Jordan on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Round of 16.
Park Hang-seo's side's run to the quarter-finals is the latest achievement in a whirlwind 12 months, which has included reaching the final of the AFC U-23 Championship, the semi-finals of the Asian Games, and winning the AFF Championship.

Abu Dhabi: Head coach Felix Sanchez believes Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Iraq which propelled Qatar into the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 quarter-finals only served to underline the impressive team spirit which exists within his talented squad.
Bassam Al Rawi’s sublime free-kick in the second half of an absorbing tie helped seal the success, as Qatar racked up a fourth successive victory to guarantee themselves a third AFC Asian Cup quarter-final appearance after reaching the same stage in both 2000 and 2011.
With their last eight encounter against Korea Republic to come at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City Stadium on Friday, Sanchez feels Qatar’s current campaign in the United Arab Emirates points to a particularly bright future for his team – especially with the 2022 FIFA World Cup edging ever closer.

Dubai: Korea Republic, says head coach Paulo Bento, will continue playing their brand of football after the Taeguk Warriors advanced to the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 quarter-finals by overcoming a gritty Bahrain on Tuesday.
Bento’s men needed extra-time to see off Bahrain 2-1 in their Round of 16 tie at the Rashid Stadium to set up a meeting with the impressive Qatar next.
Goals by Hwang Hee-chan and substitute Kim Jin-su secured the East Asians their passage to the quarter-finals but they were not at their fluid best against Bahrain and Bento said Korea Republic have to play in the style they are most comfortable with.

Dubai: An overjoyed Park Hang-seo has attributed the unity in his team as the reason for Vietnam earning a spot in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 quarter-finals.
The Southeast Asian side advanced in dramatic fashion, overcoming Jordan 4-2 on penalties after their Round of 16 tie ended 1-1 after extra-time on Sunday.
Fatigue had been a major concern for Park but the head coach from Korea Republic was proud that his players did not let that derail them from making the quarter-finals of the Continental showpiece.

Dubai: Vietnam defender Bui Tien Dung revealed his delight at delivering the decisive spot-kick, as his side beat Jordan in a penalty shootout to advance to the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 quarter-finals to Sunday.
The dramatic shootout, which followed a spirited 1-1 draw over 120 minutes, included misses from both sides, but Tien Dung kept his composure to add the final touch to his country's first ever knockout stage win in the competition.
Remarkably, the 23-year-old's winner came exactly one year to the day he scored the conclusive penalty in Vietnam's 2018 AFC U-23 Championship quarter-final shootout win over Iraq; a key stepping stone on the way to ultimately reaching the final in China.

Abu Dhabi: Islamic Republic of Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand has revealed that striker Sardar Azmoun’s advice and a steely determination not to let his country down were behind his remarkable penalty save in Sunday’s Round of 16 win over Oman at the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.
After Azmoun had been caught on camera suggesting which way Beiranvand should dive, the Persepolis custodian’s outstretched right-hand repelled Ahmed Al Mahaijri’s spot-kick in the opening moments of the game which saw Team Melli go through to the quarter-finals.
Having already saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo at last year’s FIFA World Cup, Beiranvand’s heroics in the United Arab Emirates only added to his burgeoning reputation, with the 26-year-old saying that his primary aim when facing Al Mahaijri was not to let his country down.
