Title, not qualification, is Moriyasu’s target for Japan

Xiamen: Tuesday’s 3-1 win over China PR means Japan are on the cusp of FIFA World Cup 26 qualification but head coach Hajime Moriyasu wants his players to not just settle for that but aim for glory at the global showpiece.

Despite a spirited challenge from China PR, Japan were simply too strong as they moved up to 16 points, nine ahead of Australia and one win away from sealing an eighth consecutive appearance at Finals.

Group C: China PR 1-3 Japan

Xiamen: Koki Ogawa scored a header in each half as Japan handed China PR a 3-1 defeat in Xiamen on Tuesday to maintain their commanding lead at the top of Group C in the AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26.

A pair of corners late in the first half broke the Chinese resistance, Ogawa putting Hajime Moriyasu’s side in front with a 39th minute header and Ko Itakura adding the second six minutes into injury time from close range.

And while Lin Liangming pulled one back for China PR three minutes into the restart, Ogawa’s second header of the game restored Japan’s two-goal lead and ensured the visitors took the three points.

The win sees the Japanese extend their unbeaten run qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to 12 matches and the Samurai Blue sit on 16 points from six games in the current phase of qualifiers while the Chinese remain on six points.

The crushing start to their campaign saw China PR going on to lose to Saudi Arabia and Australia but back-to-back wins against Indonesia and Bahrain have pushed them back into the mix for automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ivankovic hails China PR players for ‘great victory’

Riffa: Branko Ivankovic believes anything is possible after Zhang Yuning’s late goal against Bahrain on Thursday propelled China PR back into the mix for automatic qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Zhang struck in the first minute of time added on at the end of the second half as China PR secured a 1-0 win over Bahrain in their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 Group C tie to move to six points. 

It had looked bleak for China PR after three straight defeats but the wins over Indonesia and Bahrain mean they are now level on six points with Australia and Saudi Arabia with Japan, who play Indonesia later on Friday, leading the standings with 10 points.

Riffa: Zhang Yuning struck in the 91st minute to earn China PR a last-gasp 1-0 win over Bahrain on Thursday to breathe new life into his nation’s hopes in Group C of the AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26.

The Beijing Guoan striker pounced to steer home Wang Haijian’s centre at the end of a lacklustre clash that only came to life in the dying moments with the home side earlier denied a goal of their own when Ali Haram’s effort was ruled out by VAR.

The win moves the Chinese off the foot of the standings and into fourth place, level on six points with Australia and Saudi Arabia following their 0-0 draw in Melbourne earlier in the day. Bahrain, meanwhile, remain on five points at the halfway point.

Japan still lead the standings with 10 points from four matches ahead of their meeting with Indonesia at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Friday.

Riffa: Bahrain and China PR will both be seeking to get their respective AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 Group C campaigns back on track when they meet at Bahrain National Stadium on Thursday.

Bahrain, in fourth spot on five points, are in a slightly better position as they are level with Australia (2nd) and Saudi Arabia (3rd) but as the third round of the AFC Asian Qualifiers enters the crunch period, they can ill-afford to drop points against Indonesia with only the top two sides from the group earning automatic qualification.

Hangzhou: Thailand’s Port FC reinforced their claim for a place in the knockout stage after they came from behind to beat Zhejiang FC of China PR 2-1 in their AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 Group F match on Thursday.

The win takes Port up to top spot on nine points, two ahead of Singapore’s Lion City Sailors while Zhejiang dropped to the bottom as they stayed on three points.
