International Friendlies Wrap: Hong Kong, China shine; Singapore involved in thrillers

Kuala Lumpur: Several nations were involved in friendlies during the international break with Hong Kong, China continued showing progress under new head coach Ashley Westwood after an impressive 3-1 win over Philippines.

Singapore were involved in two five-goal thrillers - winning one and losing the other, Thailand played to two draws while Malaysia defeated Laos before battling to a stalemate with India.

Group E - MD4: Eastern (HKG) 1-2 Kaya FC-Iloilo (PHI)

Hong Kong: Kaya FC-Iloilo secured their first AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 victory on Thursday despite Jovan Bedic’s sending off as penalties from Daizo Horikoshi and Robert Lopez Mendy earned the Filipinos a 2-1 win over Eastern at Mongkok Stadium in Group E.

Horikoshi had given Kaya the lead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute but Bedic’s 69th minute expulsion for a second bookable offence unlocked the visiting defence for Eastern as Marcos Gondra struck the equaliser a minute later.

But a second penalty four minutes from time from Mendy ensured the points were claimed by Kaya and the result keeps the club’s slim hopes of securing a berth in the next round alive.

Qualifiers - Group B: Afghanistan 3-2 Bangladesh; Philippines 2-0 Cambodia

Phnom Penh: Afghanistan sealed their berth at the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025 after coming from behind to defeat Bangladesh 3-2 in their final Group B match on Sunday.

In the second game, Philippines beat Cambodia 2-0 to finish second in the group but it was not enough to secure a place in the Finals as one of the best five runners-up.

Manila: Eastern of Hong Kong secured their first win in Group E of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 after edging Philippines’ Kaya FC-Iloilo 2-1 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Kaya’s Kaishu Yamazaki cancelled out Marcos Gondra’s opener, before Noah Baffoe struck from distance to earn Eastern all three points.

Qualifiers - Group B: Afghanistan 9-0 Macau; Bangladesh 1-0 Philippines

Phnom Penh: Afghanistan boosted their chances of qualifying for the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025 after cruising 9-0 past Afghanistan in their Qualifiers Group B tie on Wednesday.

Bangladesh edged Philippines 1-0 in the other Group B fixture.

Group H - MD3: Muangthong United FC (THA) 2-2 Dynamic Herb Cebu FC (PHI)

Bangkok: Muangthong United and  Dynamic Herb Cebu played to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 Group H tie at the Rajamangala Stadium on Wednesday.

Felicio Brown cancelled out Rhino Goutier’s first half opener before Muangthong struck in the 79th minute through Emil Roback’s header, only for Dynamic Cebu to reply in stoppage time through Rintaro Hama to force the draw.

Phnom Penh: Afghanistan produced a clinical display to defeat Philippines 8-0 in their  AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025 Qualifiers Group B tie on Monday.

The later game saw Cambodia edge Macau 1-0.
