Saitama: Tomoaki Makino has admitted that watching last year’s AFC Champions League on television stirred emotions of regret and frustration as 2017 winners Urawa Red Diamonds get set to return to the competition against Thailand’s Buriram United on Wednesday.
The defender’s last appearance in the tournament came in the 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in the second leg of the 2017 final as the 2-1 aggregate victory saw the Japanese team add to their 2007 title to become Continental champions for a second time.
Urawa failed to qualify for the 2018 edition, however, meaning Makino and his teammates had to watch on as domestic rivals Kashima Antlers were crowned kings of Asia. But the Saitama side secured their return to the AFC Champions League after winning the Emperor’s Cup at the end of last year.

Ibaraki: Having joined AFC Champions League holders Kashima Antlers ahead of the 2019 season, and marked his debut with a goal in the Play-off win over Newcastle Jets, Sho Ito has his sights on Asian glory.
Of the 11 who started Tuesday's AFC Champions League Play-off for defending champions Kashima, only new signing Ito had not been a part of the historic triumph in Tehran last November.
But the former Yokohama F. Marinos forward took little time in adjusting to the continental game, opening the scoring at Kashima Soccer Stadium in the 18th minute with his maiden goal for the club.

Jeddah: Chilean Jose Luis Sierra will replace Slaven Bilic as the new Al Ittihad manager, the Saudi Pro League club said on Monday.
“The club board decided after reviewing the team's recent results, which were not up to our hopes, to end the coach's contract and appoint Jose Luis Sierra as the new coach,” the club announced on their social media channels.
Al Ittihad, who agreed a three-year-deal with Bilic in September last year, have struggled to find form in the domestic league under the Croatian and are second from bottom in the standings.
