No district team has won Hong Kong's top flight since the hazy days of the 1960s. Always the domain of big spenders or storied sides such as South China AA, Seiko, Happy Valley AA, Kitchee SC and Sun Hei, Yueng Long were the last district team to lift the title in 1963.

That is until Wofoo Tai Po's time came on May 4, when a 2-1 win away at R&F in Guangzhou secured the Hong Kong Premier League title with a match to spare. One major milestone achieved, and one more coming up swiftly with a visit to the DPR Korea capital and a date with defending AFC Cup East Zone champions 4.25 SC.

The-AFC.com spoke exclusively to Tai Po captain Wong Wai as he reflected on their recent success, AFC Cup experience so far and how they will look to continue their momentum in Pyongyang.

Tajikistan’s FC istiklol, India’s Chennaiyin FC and 4.25 SC of DPR Korea lead the way in Groups D, E and I respectively and further wins would edge them ever closer to the knockout rounds.

The title triumph completed Tai Po’s fairy-tale rise as they became the first district team to win the Hong Kong Premier League.

Tai Po were one of the district teams introduced by the Hong Kong Football Association with the help of the government in 2002 and they started their journey in the Third Division.

The visitors stunned the home crowd by opening the scoring after just three minutes. Son Phyong-il made a surging run down the left and his cross was perfect for Kim Yu-song to attack and head home.

It was almost 2-0 four minutes later but Rim Chol-min couldn’t find the target with a header from Ri Hyong-jin’s cross.

The visitors made a decent early opening when Igor Sartori’s low cross from the left found Sandro, but the striker couldn’t keep his shot down.

Hirokane Harima then had a good chance for the home side after a through pass from Jordi Tarres. But the striker’s tame effort lacked conviction and it was comfortably saved by Tai Po goalkeeper Tsang Man Fai.

The three points ensured a positive start to their Group I campaign as well as striking a blow against their domestic rivals.

Having beaten fellow Hong Kong Premier League side Kitchee SC in Group I’s Matchday One, the hosts were on top in the opening spell and Brazilian-born striker Sandro forced Hang Yuan goalkeeper Huang Chiu-Lin into action with a firm header on 11 minutes.

Benchy Estama responded at the other end with a superb free-kick on the quarter-hour mark that needed a combination of Tsang Man Fai and the crossbar to deny the Haitian.

The visitors started the game on the front foot and Won Song’s spectacular curling effort from 20 yards brought out a flying save from Huang Chiu-Lin after 14 minutes.

Some determined defensive blocks kept 4.25 SC out on several occasions but the opening goal looked a matter of time as the Koreans continued to dominate.
