Basra: Iraq were at their best as they defeated Saudi Arabia 4-1 in an international friendly match on Wednesday.
Although FIFA World Cup Russia 2018-bound Saudi Arabia dominated possession, Iraq made their chances count at the Basra Sports City Stadium.
Iraq's first goal was a gift as an unfortunate Saeed Awadh Al Yami sent the ball into his own net in the 21st minute.
Undeterred by the setback, Saudi Arabia continued to press but Iraq were solid in defence as they kept the visitors at bay to hang on to their lead going into the break.
Iraq's first half defensive discipline was rewarded when Eman Mohsin Majeed widened their lead just two minutes into the second half.
More joy was to follow as Muhanad Ali scored their third in the 51st minute.
Saudi Arabia, playing with a largely different set of players from the team that defeated Moldova 3-0 in an international friendly on Monday, gave themselves hope when Hassan Muath Fallatah pulled a goal back in the 57th minute.
Iraq, however, were not to be denied the win as Ali scored his second of the night to delight the home fans.
