Hong Kong: Head coach Louis Lancaster will be looking to build on Chinese Taipei’s encouraging show during qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 when they take to the field for the first of their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers against Jordan on Thursday.
Chinese Taipei hauled themselves into contention for an unlikely place at the Finals in the United Arab Emirates during the Qualifiers in 2017 and 2018 with victories over Bahrain and Singapore that left them one point short of a first AFC Asian Cup appearance since 1968.
But while they fell agonisingly short, Lancaster is hoping he can take the lessons learned in that run of matches – and those since – to put Chinese Taipei in a position to challenge for a top two finish in demanding group.
Lancaster’s team have been drawn to face 2015 AFC Asian Cup winners Australia as well as the Jordanians, Nepal and Kuwait in a challenging Group B for the East Asian side, but the English coach is setting his sights high.
