TOKYO: Brazilian forward Fernandinho's last-minute goal gave Kyoto Sanga a 2-1 win on Sunday over Consadole Sapporo, keeping the latter at the bottom of the standings in the J-League after the 21st round.
After going down 0-1 in the 18th minute, midfielder Daigo Watanabe hit an equalizer for Kyoto in the 49th minute. Fernandinho then struck home the decider with just one minute left on the clock.
Sapporo is at the bottom of the table with 16 points, one behind JEF United Chiba, who drew with Kashiwa Reysol 1-1 on Saturday.
"We started the second half with a three-backs defence line. It increased the opportunities for Fernandinho to move forward more," said Kyoto coach Hisashi Kato.
"Either side could have won the match, but Fernandinho's ability decided the winners in the end. I'm just happy that we were able to score in the last minute to get three winning points," he added.
Fernandinho said: "It's the first time that I scored a game-deciding goal since I turned professional, so I'm really happy about it."
In other games, Kawasaki Frontale came back from a goal down twice to finish in a 2-2 tie with Jubilo Iwata, while Yokohama Marinos drew with Shimizu S-Pulse 1-1.
