Port Moresby: DPR Korea began their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 campaign in impressive fashion on Sunday with a 2-0 win over European champions Sweden.
A goal from Ri Hyang-sim on 25 minutes and a Kim So-hyang strike just after the break proved to be the difference, amid warm conditions at the John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
In truth the East Asians were thoroughly deserved victors with their delivery from corners a constant threat, as was their short-passing game in attack.
Indeed it was a smart interchange of passes that led to the opener. Ri Hyang-sim finished low into the corner after a smart ball behind the backline from Kim So-hyang.
And it was a similar move saw the lead extended as Kim So-hyang pushed home from close-range after a superb driving run into the penalty area by Kim Phyong-hwa.
There was plenty of endeavour from the Swedes despite the oppressive humidity, but genuine goalscoring opportunities were limited at best, with star striker Stina Blackstenius well shackled.
Sweden’s best chance didn’t arrive until the dying minutes with a stinging shot from Michelle De Jongh, and while the Europeans enjoyed a much-improved second half, DPR Korea goalkeeper Kim Myong-sun largely remained a spectator.
DPR Korea’s win leaves them well placed in Group A in a pool which also features Brazil and Papua New Guinea.
