Port Moresby: Korea Republic exited the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016 after losing to Germany 2-0 on Monday.
Three-time FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup champions Germany needed just a point to lock up top spot, and they were sitting pretty at half-time thanks to goals from Dina Orschmann and Stefanie Sanders.
Orschmann netted one of the goals of the tournament on 13 minutes when she slalomed past a couple of defenders before curling the ball into the far corner from a 45-degree angle.
Sanders soon got in on the act, converting from close-range after a fine run down the left and cross from Anna Gerhardt.
Sanders could have put the game out of sight within a matter of moments, only for her breakaway run to end with a shot against the crossbar under pressure from a host of retreating Korean defenders.
Needing to outdo Mexico’s result in the other group match to keep their tournament hopes alive, Korea Republic made the German backline work hard at times, though gilt-edged goalscoring opportunities remained elusive. Han Chae-rin made one driving run into the penalty area only to skew her shot well wide.
Germany were aggressive in seeking further goals, pushing bodies forward in numbers. There were near-misses for Gerhardt and Jasmin Sehan, while Sanders hit the post with a rasping effort from outside the penalty area.
Ultimately Mexico defeated Venezuela 3-2 in the section's other match, leaving Korea Republic in third, three points shy of qualification.
