Jakarta: Hosts Malaysia claimed their first win in their AFC U-23 Championship 2016 qualifying campaign as they beat Macau 2-0 at the Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday.
A goal in each half ensured the Malaysians gained their first win following an opening 2-1 loss at the hands of Vietnam two days earlier.
Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim (12” penalty) and Wan Ahmad Amirzafran Wan Nadris (67”) both scored their first international goals in the Group I game.
Buoyed by their first win, Razip Ismail-led Malaysia will next play Japan with Macau taking on Vietnam to seek their first win in the campaign on Tuesday.
Ten group winners and five best second-placed teams from all groups will join hosts Qatar at the AFC U-23 Championship 2016, with January’s 16-team competition also serving as Asia’s qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio.
