29th AFC Congress concludes in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur: The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress concluded on Saturday with AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa (Bahrain) re-elected unopposed for a second four-year term (2019-2023) at the helm of a new-look AFC Executive Committee.

Newly-elected FIFA Council member Praful Patel, addressing delegates on behalf of the AFC President who was mourning the demise of his mother, said: “I am extremely honoured at the level of support and trust that you have invested in me to lead the Asian football family again in the next four years.
“I am sure that with your continued support and solidarity, we can all take Asian football to even greater heights.
“I also am grateful for all your declarations of support and your endorsements in recent weeks.
“And to all those elected for the various roles – FIFA Council, AFC Vice President, Female representatives and AFC Executive Committee – congratulations."

Shaikh Salman unanimously re-elected AFC President

Kuala Lumpur: The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress, held in the Malaysian capital on Saturday, has re-elected Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa by acclamation for a second four-year term until 2023.

Shaikh Salman, whose Presidency began in May 2013, was the only candidate for the position.
There were initially three candidates confirmed by the AFC Electoral Committee following the completion of the eligibility checks on March 1, 2019.
The number was reduced following the withdrawals of HE Mohamed Khalfan Matar Saeed Al Romaithi (UAE) and Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) – both of whom threw their full support behind Shaikh Salman.

Five AFC Vice Presidents confirmed

Kuala Lumpur: The 29th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress has elected in Malaysian capital on Saturday the AFC Vice Presidents from each of the five AFC zones who will serve for the next four-year term (2019-2023).

Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) was re-elected by acclamation for another four-year term for the West Zone.
Joining him are three new Vice Presidents who also confirmed their places by acclamation - Mr. Mehdi Taj (Islamic Republic of Iran) for the Central Zone, Mr. Zaw Zaw (Myanmar) for ASEAN Zone and Mr. Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat (Pakistan) for the South Zone.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ganbaatar Amgalanbaatar (Mongolia) was elected as the new AFC Vice President for the East Zone.

Six AFC representatives on FIFA Council confirmed

Kuala Lumpur: In addition to the AFC President and FIFA Vice-President, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Member Associations on Saturday elected Asia’s six representatives who will serve on the FIFA Council for the next four-year term (2019-2023) at the 29th AFC Congress 2019 in the Malaysian capital.

HE Du Zhaocai (China PR), Mr. Praful Patel (India), Mr. Kohzo Tashima (Japan), Mr. Mariano V. Areneta, Jr. (Philippines) and Mr. Saoud A. Aziz M A Al-Mohannadi (Qatar) secured the simple majority after one round of voting.
Ms. Mahfuza Akhter Kiron (Bangladesh) secured the simple majority required when she obtained the most votes in the elections for the FIFA Female Council position.
