Nanjing: Japan captain Hina Sugita walked away with the Most Valuable Player award while team-mate Rikako Kobayashi took the top scorer title at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2013, which the Japanese won after beating DPR Korea 6-5 on penalties at Jiangning Sports Centre on Sunday.
Sugita earned the top individual accolade following her consistently assured performances throughout the competition, during which the Japan skipper scored two goals in Japan’s 19-0 rout of Guam and one against Iran before netting a hat-trick against Thailand in the semi-finals.
Rikako Kobayashi edged Sugita by one goal to become the topscorer of the competition with seven goals from four matches.
Kobayashi scored five goals against Guam and also fired two past Thailand in the crucial semi-final. Japan scored 35 goals in total in four matches they played in the competition.
