QF: Australia fight back to advance at Iraq’s expense

Shenzhen: Australia came from behind twice to defeat Iraq 3-2 in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 quarter-final at the Baoan Sports Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Australia will face either Japan or Islamic Republic of Iran in the semi-finals with the win also sealing their spot at the FIFA U20 World Cup Chile 2025, having last appeared at the global stage in 2013.

Tanaka on the double as Japan beat Australia

Miami: Mina Tanaka struck twice as Japan defeated Australia in a 4-0 win in the opening game of the SheBelieves Cup in Houston on Thursday, giving new head coach Nils Nielsen the perfect start.

Japan dominated from the outset, taking the lead in the sixth minute when a low shot from Fuka Nagano was directed into the bottom corner by Tanaka.

Pathum Thani: Adrian Segecic expressed pride after Sydney FC showed resilience to edge Bangkok United 3-2 in their AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 Round of 16 second leg tie to advance to the quarter-finals with a 5-4 aggregate score. 

Goals from Joe Lolley and Segecic followed by an extra time winner from Douglas Costa gave the Australian side victory after Bangkok had taken a 3-2 aggregate lead following Muhsen Al Ghassani's first half strike.

Sydney’s opponents in the last eight will be the winners of the tie between Thailand’s Port FC and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC of Korea Republic that will be played on Thursday.

Shenzhen: Head coach Trevor Morgan believes Australia are on the right trajectory following their 2-1 victory over China PR on Tuesday which saw the Young Socceroos topping Group A of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 with a perfect record.

Despite rotating his lineup, Morgan’s side dictated terms despite China PR’s valiant efforts to turn the tie around.

Shenzhen: Australia secured top spot after defeating China PR 2-1 in their final AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group A at the Baoan Sports Centre Stadium on Tuesday.

Having won all three matches, Australia will play the Group B runners-up in the quarter-finals with China PR to face the top side.

Kawasaki: Kawasaki Frontale completed the league phase of the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 with a 2-0 win over Australia’s Central Coast Mariners at Todoroki Stadium on Tuesday as the J1 League side notched up their sixth victory in eight games ahead of the knockout rounds.

Brazilian striker Erison scored from the penalty spot nine minutes before half time and Marcinho struck deep into injury time to move Kawasaki onto 18 points and Shigetoshi Hasebe’s side will now wait to find out who they face in the last 16.

The result means Central Coast end the league phase bottom of the 12-team standings with a solitary point, with Mark Jackson’s AFC Cup™ 203/24 winners losing seven of their eight matches.
