Popovic, Renard pleased despite stalemate

Melbourne: Australia's Tony Popovic and Herve Renard of Saudi Arabia were satisfied despite their sides sharing points in their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 Group C match on Thursday.

In a match laden with chances, neither side could convert their opportunities as both moved to six points at the midway point with qualification still very much in their own hands.

Group C: Australia 0-0 Saudi Arabia

Melbourne: Australia and Saudi Arabia battled to a 0-0 draw in their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 Group C tie at the Melbourne Rectangular Arena on Thursday.

It was a result neither would have been pleased with as the draw took both to six points at the midway stage of the AFC Asian Qualifiers.

Melbourne: Australia will aim to extend their recent revival in the AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 when they host Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

One point from their first two Group C matches led to the departure of Graham Arnold with Tony Popovic’s arrival as head coach serving as a breath of fresh air as they claimed four points from October’s games against China PR and Japan.

The confidence gained from October’s results is something Popovic is counting on to deliver success against the West Asian side, who will have Frenchman Herve Renard in the dug-out following the departure of Italian Roberto Mancini.

Kuala Lumpur: The dates and venues of the upcoming edition of Asia’s most prestigious women’s tournament – the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ – were recommended on Tuesday at the 3rd AFC Women’s Football Committee meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Group E - MD4: Sydney FC (AUS) 0-1 Sanfrecce Hiroshima (JPN)

Sydney: Sanfrecce Hiroshima secured their place in the knockout rounds of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 on Thursday as Michael Skibbe’s side handed Sydney FC a 1-0  defeat at the Jubilee Stadium to seal qualification from Group E.

Substitute Mutsuki Kato headed home the only goal of an enthralling game in the 60th minute to keep the J1 League side perfect after four rounds while Sydney remain on six points with two rounds of matches remaining.

The win means Hiroshima cannot finish outside the top two places in the group and the Japanese club will take their place in December’s draw for the last 16.

Trailing 2-0 to China PR's Shanghai Shenhua after goals from Andre Luis and Yu Hanchao, the Australian side reduced the deficit through Sabit Ngor with 15 minutes on the clock with Bailey Brandtman scoring deep into injury time to end Mariners' three-match losing run.

Gosford: Bailey Brandtman scored deep into injury time to earn Central Coast Mariners a dramatic 2-2 draw with Shanghai Shenhua in Gosford on Tuesday as the Chinese Super League side threw away a two goal lead in the league phase of the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25.

Mark Jackson’s side picked up their first point of the campaign when Brandtman netted at a late corner having seen Andre Luis and Yu Hanchao give the visitors a significant advantage with goals in the 50th and 64th minutes respectively.

But Sabit Ngor pulled one back for Mariners with 15 minutes remaining and Brandtman struck five minutes into added time to break the AFC Cup holders’ losing run in the competition in front of their own fans at Central Coast Stadium.
