International Friendlies Wrap: Hong Kong, China shine; Singapore involved in thrillers

Kuala Lumpur: Several nations were involved in friendlies during the international break with Hong Kong, China continued showing progress under new head coach Ashley Westwood after an impressive 3-1 win over Philippines.

Singapore were involved in two five-goal thrillers - winning one and losing the other, Thailand played to two draws while Malaysia defeated Laos before battling to a stalemate with India.

Group A: Paro FC sign off in style

Thimphu: Bhutan’s Paro FC fought back to defeat Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh 2-1 in their AFC Challenge League™ 2024/25 Group A tie on Friday to conclude their campaign on a high.

Paro finished third on four points while Bashundhara completed their campaign with three defeats.

Bangladesh retain title

Kathmandu: Defending champions Bangladesh won the SAFF Women’s Championship 2024, beating hosts Nepal 2-1 in the final played at the Dasharath Stadium Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The win saw Bangladesh lifting the title for a second time while it was Nepal's sixth runners-up finish.

Thimphu: India’s East Bengal boosted their AFC Challenge League™ 2024/25 hopes after sealing a comprehensive 4-0 win over Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh in their Group A tie on Tuesday.

Having drawn 2-2 against Paro FC on Matchday One, East Bengal scored all four goals in the first half to set up an exciting final day encounter with Lebanon’s Nejmeh SC to decide the group winners.

Qualifiers - Group B: Afghanistan 3-2 Bangladesh; Philippines 2-0 Cambodia

Phnom Penh: Afghanistan sealed their berth at the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025 after coming from behind to defeat Bangladesh 3-2 in their final Group B match on Sunday.

In the second game, Philippines beat Cambodia 2-0 to finish second in the group but it was not enough to secure a place in the Finals as one of the best five runners-up.

Thimphu: Lebanon’s Nejmeh SC started their AFC Challenge League™ 2024/25 Group A campaign on a positive note after edging Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh 1-0 at Changlimithang Stadium on Saturday.

With India’s East Bengal and Paro FC of Bhutan playing to a 2-2 draw in the earlier tie, Nejmeh are the early pacesetters with only the group winners guaranteed of a knockout stage spot.

Phnom Penh: Afghanistan defeated Cambodia 3-1 on Friday to move within touching distance of the AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025.

The win took Afghanistan to nine points in Group B of the Qualifiers, with the Central Asian side only needing a draw against Bangladesh -who defeated Macau 7-0 - when the two sides meet on Sunday.

Bangladesh edged Philippines 1-0 in the other Group B fixture.

Phnom Penh: Philippines made a flying start to their AFC U17 Asian Cup™ Saudi Arabia 2025 Qualifiers Group B campaign with a 7-0 win against Macau on Saturday.

In the second game, 10-man Cambodia showed resilience to edge Bangladesh 1-0 thanks to a late Daro Thach strike.

India beat Bangladesh to retain title

Thimphu: Defending champions India beat Bangladesh 2-0 in the final to retain the SAFF U17 Championship title played at the Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu, Bhutan on Monday.

After a barren first half, a dominant India opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Mohammed Kaif headed in Mate Ngamgouhou’s corner, with Md. Arbash netting the second in time added on at the end of the second half to confirm the win.
