Syria’s Mohammad disappointed; Pereira proud of his Thai squad

Shenzhen: Syria and Thailand bid goodbye to the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 when they exited with a thrilling 2-2 draw that went down to the wire on Thursday.

While the Group D match had its moments in the first half, it sprung to life after the break when 10-man Thailand came back from a two-goal deficit in a 10-minute span courtesy of Thanawut Phochai’s brace.

Goals from Ahmad Al Kalou and Mohammad Al Mustafa saw the West Asians take the lead to ultimately finish third while Thailand closed their campaign at the bottom.

Group D - MD3: Syria 2-2 Thailand

Shenzhen: Syria and Thailand shared honours at the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 with a  2-2 in their final Group D match at the Longhua Cultural and Sports Centre Stadium on Thursday.

Syria ended their campaign in third with two points while Thailand finished bottom, with Korea Republic topping the group following a 1-1 draw with Japan.

Shenzhen: Syria must win against Thailand on Thursday to stand a chance of making the quarter-finals of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025, with their qualification also dependent on the outcome of the Korea Republic-Japan match.

The 1994 champions are one point, with Japan a further two ahead and with a better goal difference. Korea Republic have already qualified after back-to-back wins.

Shenzhen: Japan’s Yuto Ozeki praised his team’s collective spirit following their hard-fought 2-2 draw with Syria in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group D tie on Monday.

Syria took a surprise lead in the 10th minute before Ozeki levelled the score. However, the West Asian side regained the advantage through Ahmad Soufi going into the break before substitute Rento Takaoka came to Japan’s rescue to snatch a point for the 2016 winners.

Shenzhen: Japan had to twice come from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw with Syria in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group D tie at the Longhua Cultural and Sports Centre Stadium on Monday.

The result took Japan to four points while Syria, who were defeated by Korea Republic in their opening match, will rue having to settle for a draw after producing a valiant performance.

Shenzhen: Korea Republic made a winning start to their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group D campaign but the 2-1 triumph against Syria was not without complications.  

Head coach Lee Chang-won admitted that nerves got to his inexperienced players after they almost let slip a 2-0 advantage, with Syria forcing them on the back foot for much of the second half.

Fitness issues were another concern for Lee with Son Seung-min, Ha Jeong-woo and Baek Ming-gyu taken off before the hour mark.

Group D - MD1: Korea Republic 2-1 Syria

Shenzhen: Korea Republic had to work hard before securing a 2-1 win against Syria in their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group D opener at Longhua Cultural and Sports Centre Stadium on Friday.

The 12-time champions surged to a 2-0 first half lead but Syria produced a much-improved display after the break only to fall just short of a comeback.
