AFC Cup 2020 Matchday Two: ASEAN Zone Preview

Kuala Lumpur: After an exciting round of fixtures on Matchday One, the 2020 AFC Cup action returns to the ASEAN Zone for more thrilling ties as the 12 sides from Southeast Asia get ready for Matchday Two.

Tuesday brings four fixtures in Groups F and G, while the spotlight will be on Group H a day later, after which a clear picture will begin to emerge of the early frontrunners in this year's Continental competition.

AFC Cup 2020 Matchday Two: West Zone Preview

Kuala Lumpur: Two weeks after an opening matchday full of excitement, the action resumes with Matchday Two of the 2020 AFC Cup on Monday and Tuesday. 

In action over the two days are 12 West Asian teams representing seven countries, with matches from Groups A and B taking place on Monday, while Group C fixtures will be played on Tuesday.

PSM’s Ferdinand: New-look Makassar can be a force

Jakarta: Ferdinand Sinaga insists that PSM Makassar can rediscover the form that saw them make the AFC Cup knockout rounds last year as the Indonesian side prepare to host Myanmar’s Shan United in Group H on Wednesday. 

A new-look Makassar side without the likes of Marc Klok and Eero Markkanen – both key in helping the team reach the 2019 ASEAN Zonal semi-finals – lost 2-1 against Singapore’s Tampines Rovers on Matchday One two weeks ago.

But with a number of the players making their maiden AFC Cup appearances for Makassar, Ferdinand remains optimistic about his side’s prospects in the 2020 campaign.

Singapore: Jordan Webb believes that Tampines Rovers’ ability to deal with PSM Makassar’s aerial balls was key in helping them claim a 2-1 victory in their opening 2020 AFC Cup game at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday. 

Canadian Webb broke the deadlock for the Singaporean side midway through the first half before Boris Kopitovic added a second in the 64th minute as Tampines looked to be heading for a comfortable victory.

The Indonesian visitors fought back, though, with Ferdinand Sinaga getting on the scoresheet soon after as Makassar sought to salvage a draw, but Tampines were able hold out to get their Group H campaign off to a winning start.

‘Machine-like’ Bali United's strength showed, says Platje

Bali: Melvin Platje believes that Bali United displayed their true strength by coming from a goal down to defeat Vietnam’s Than Quang Ninh 4-1 as they got their 2020 AFC Cup Group G campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday. 

Than Quang Ninh were reduced to 10 men early on at Bali’s Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium but the hosts fell behind to Jamaican Jeremie Lynch’s goal and went into the interval trailing despite their man advantage.

But the Indonesian champions came out firing after the restart with Rahmat Syamsuddin equalising almost immediately, before Platje netted a fine volley and a superb curling effort into the top corner either side of an Ilija Spasojevic penalty to complete a resounding win.

ASEAN & East Asia Domestic Wrap: Leagues kick off in Thailand, Cambodia

Kuala Lumpur: Defending Thai League 1 champions Chiangrai United began their 2020 domestic campaign with a 1-1 draw against Samut Prakan City while in Cambodia, Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng started their title defence with a resounding 5-1 victory over Soltilo Angkor. 

Elsewhere, Hantharwady United remained perfect in Myanmar and things look increasingly good for Sydney FC in Australia despite the league leaders not playing over the weekend.
