Ting’s strike brings Olympic dream a step closer

Sydney: Chinese Taipei may be considered outsiders to claim one of Asia’s two remaining qualifying spots for the Olympic women’s football tournament at Tokyo 2020, but a goal from Ting Chi means a long-held dream is a step closer to becoming a reality.

Ting’s strike, which carried her side to a 1-0 success over Thailand in the opening AFC Women’s Qualifying Tournament Group B match on Monday, made it eight successive victories in the competition for Chinese Taipei, with Olympic qualification now potentially two or three wins away.

Another positive result against either Australia or China PR would give Chinese Taipei a good chance of advancing to next month’s final Play-off Round, where they would meet one of Korea Republic, Vietnam or Myanmar on a home and away basis.

Sydney: Kazuo Echigo has called on his Chinese Taipei side to make the most of their AFC Olympic Qualifiers Final Round experience, after they began their Group B campaign with an important 1-0 win over Thailand on Monday.

Ting Chi’s first-half winner means another victory in either of their two remaining matches against Australia and China PR would almost certainly see Echigo’s charges through to next month’s play-off round, with a maiden Olympic qualification remaining the ultimate goal.

Jeju: Colin Bell has praised his Korea Republic players for their empathic 7-0 victory over Myanmar in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament Group A opener at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Monday.

Ji So-yun, Park Yee-Un and Yeo Min-ji all scored braces while Lee So-dam also found the back of the net as the Taeguk Ladies began their Olympic qualifying campaign on a positive note.

Myanmar, on the other, will be hoping for an improved performance when they face Vietnam on Thursday.

Leumeah: Chinese Taipei moved a step closer to their first-ever Olympic Games women’s football appearance with a 1-0 win over Thailand in the opening match in Group B of the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Campbelltown Stadium on Monday.

Ting Chi’s strike midway through the first half gave Kazuo Echigo’s side a lead they never relinquished, well and truly keeping alive their hopes of advancing to next month’s final qualifying play-off as one the group’s top two sides.

Monday’s defeat comes as a severe blow to Thailand, who are now likely to need positive results against both China PR and Australia if their Olympic dream is to become a reality.

Jeju: Korea Republic got their AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament off to a flying start with a 7-0 win over Myanmar in their Group A opener at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Monday.

Ji So-yun put the Taeguk Ladies ahead with a fifth minute penalty and Lee So-dam doubled their advantage for a 2-0 lead at half-time, before Korea Republic turned on the power in the second half to register a resounding win.

Colin Bell’s side are one step closer to earning a spot at Tokyo 2020, while Myanmar will have to win their next match against Vietnam to keep their Olympic dream alive.

Women's Qualifiers: All you need to know

Kuala Lumpur: With 43 matches and several memorable games completed, there will be little room for error when Asia’s best teams convene for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 Asian Qualifiers Final Round in the coming week.

Korea Republic, Vietnam and Myanmar will see Group A action in Jeju Island, Korea Republic, while Australia, Thailand, China PR and Chinese Taipei will play their Group B matches in Sydney, Australia.

The top two sides from Group B will play off – on a home and away basis – against the top two teams from Group A – for the final two places, alongside hosts Japan, at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
