Ho Chi Minh City: A Football Medical Course opened on Tuesday to update team physiotherapists and physicians on the latest sports medical knowledge and necessary skills to be ready for matches in the AFC U-13 Girls’ Football Tournament 2012 this weekend.
AFC Elite Medical Officer Dr. An Nan of China PR is the instructor in the three-day course that attracts the participation of seven physiotherapists from Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
“I think this kind of course is very important for the team physicians and physios because it can help them get more familiar with medical knowledge related to AFC tournaments,” Dr. An told the-afc.com.
“The course is based on real needs, so it is very helpful for the physicians and teams.
“The course focuses on different fields related to football medicine, with emphasis on the long-term care of footballers’ health. Besides that, we also provide updated information and new changes in the regulations,” she added.
Dr. An has said she has never seen a girl player having a heart attack during play and confirmed that cardiac arrests that happened to some professional players recently are rare cases but also said that this reminds team physicians about their responsibility.
“They have to be ready anytime during the game, have the correct training and have their eyes tightly focused on this kind of incident,” she said.
“The aim of the course is to have physicians prepared for the tournaments in the future and when this incident happens, they have sufficient skills and experience to control the situation.
“If cardiac arrest happens, the first one or two minutes are very important for the patient.”
