#ACL - Matchday One in Numbers

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 got underway with a bang in the past week with 20 matches taking place across 18 countries as the group stage of the continental competition returned to its traditional home-and-away basis.

Eight former AFC Champions League winners are in the running for this year’s title, while a further eight sides were appearing in the group stage for the first time and a host of global superstars also made their debuts in the tournament. 
 
As the sides now look forward to the Matchday Two encounters in early October, the-AFC.com looks back at the week in numbers.

Flying starts for China PR, Japan in women's football

Hangzhou: Defending champions Japan and China PR kicked off their Hangzhou Asian Games women's football campaigns in emphatic fashion on Friday.

Japan defeated Bangladesh 8-0 while China PR cruised 16-0 past Mongolia. 

In the men's competition, Uzbekistan took a firm grip on the Group C top spot after a 1-0 win over Hong Kong, China while Qatar suffered a setback after they were held 0-0 by Palestine in Group B.

Ronaldo, Talisca power Al Nassr past Al Ahli

Riyadh: Cristiano Ronaldo and Talisca netted braces as Al Nassr defeated Al Ahli Saudi 4-2 in a 2023/24 Saudi Pro League tie on Friday.

The victory was Al Nassr's fifth consecutive win after having opened their campaign with back-to-back defeats as they moved up to 15 points, three adrift of leaders and defending champions Al Ittihad.

Qualifiers Round 2: Australia first to qualify from Group B

Hanoi: Australia booked their place in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup™ Indonesia 2024 after defeating Vietnam 2-1 in their Qualifiers Round 2 tie at the National Youth Football Training Centre on Friday.

There's still a game against Bangladesh remaining but with six points, Australia have assured themselves a place among the top two in Group B.
 
As for Vietnam, they are still in the hunt for a place in the Finals and face a direct fight with their next opponents Philippines, who put themselves back into contention after a 3-1 win over Bangladesh earlier on Friday.
