Guangzhou: All you need to know about Al Ahli ahead of Saturday’s crucial AFC Champions League final 2nd leg.
Overview
Al Ahli claimed their sixth United Arab Emirates league title in 2014 after they finished the season 16 points ahead of runners-up Al Wahda. They also won the UAE League Cup but were denied a domestic treble after losing 1-0 to Al Ain in the President’s Cup final.
The Dubai-based club struggled in their first five appearances in the AFC Champions League, going out in the qualifying round in 2002-03 and failing to get past the Group Stage in 2005, 2009, 2010 and last year.
But Al Ahli finally made it through to the Knockout Stage this year by finishing second in Group D and after being held 0-0 at home by league rivals Al Ain in the first leg in the Round of 16, they drew 3-3 in the return game to advance to the quarter-finals on away goals.
They overcame Iranian side Naft Tehran 3-1 on aggregate in the last eight before claiming a dramatic victory over Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the semi-finals as Kwon Kyung-won’s stoppage-time strike gave them a 4-3 aggregate triumph.
