Kuala Lumpur: Al Hilal’s record in continental competition is second to none within Asian football, but the club have yet to taste success since the creation of the AFC Champions League back in 2002 and the Riyadh-based side will be eager to finally return to the top.
As the only team to have won each of the Asian Club Championship, Asian Cup Winners’ Cup and Asian Super Cup on two occasions, Al Hilal’s record is unrivalled, but with the last of those continental wins coming as far back as 2000, the club’s fans are growing ever more impatient.
Al Hilal first picked up continental silverware in 1991 when they claimed the Asian Club Championship for the first time, and it was to kick-off a remarkable 12-year period that saw the Saudi Arabian side sweep everything before them.
The Asian Cup Winners’ Cup title was to follow in 1997 when Saudi Arabia legends Sami Al Jaber and Yousef Al Thuniyan were on the scoresheet as the club handed Carlos Queiroz-coached Nagoya Grampus Eight a 3-1 defeat in the final.
