Analysis: 10-man Jeonbuk earn point at Sydney

Sydney: Honours were shared at the Jubilee Stadium on Wednesday as Sydney FC were unable to hold out against visitors Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors despite going into the closing minutes a goal and a man up.

A back-and-forth match between Australia's league leaders and the reigning Korea Republic champions proved an entertaining affair, but the hosts failed to make their numerical advantage count and a first home win in the AFC Champions League since April 2016 continues to elude the Sky Blues.

Sydney: Captain Alex Wilkinson admitted Sydney FC's inability to see out the tie against 10-man Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors cost the Sky Blues three points after a late equaliser from Han Kyo-won saw the Group H clash end 2-2 on Wednesday.

The hosts initially went behind when Luke Brattan turned home an inswinging corner past his own 'keeper, but Trent Buhaigar scored a fine equaliser after bamboozling Choi Bo-kyung to restore parity.

And with 13 minutes of the tie remaining things went from bad to worse for the unfortunate Choi after he was adjudged to have handled in the area, conceding a penalty and receiving a red card.

Sydney: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC head coach Jose Morais was left frustrated by his side’s failure to pick up all three points in their 2020 AFC Champions League clash with Sydney FC on Wednesday, despite Han Kyo-won’s late equaliser earning his 10-man team a 2-2 draw.

Han’s 89th minute goal ensured the two-time champions picked up a point even though they had been reduced to 10 men with a little more than a quarter of an hour remaining in the game and after Adam Le Fondre had put Sydney in front from the penalty spot.

Sydney: Han Kyo-won scored a minute from time to earn 10-man Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday as the two-time AFC Champions League winners fought back to take a point from their Group H meeting at Jubilee Oval.

Sydney looked set to claim a famous win when Adam Le Fondre converted from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time to put the home side in front, but Han reacted quickest after Murilo’s shot came back off the post to secure a draw for Jose Morais’ side.

Iskandar Puteri: Johor Darul Ta’zim created another piece of history on Tuesday as the Malaysian champions defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings to win their maiden AFC Champions League game at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. 

The Korean heavyweights may have dominated possession with more than 61%, but JDT again showed that they are a match for anyone on the Continent on home soil as the 2-1 win moved them to second in Group G and left their opponents bottom and still seeking their first points of the campaign.

We need to be more clinical, says Johor Darul Ta'zim's Mora

Iskandar Puteri: Johor Darul Ta’zim head coach Benjamin Mora called on his team to sharpen up their finishing skills after a 2-1 win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings on Tuesday gave the Malaysian champions their first win in the 2020 AFC Champions League.

Brazilian defender Mauricio headed home the winner 17 minutes from time for the Southern Tigers after Gonzalo Cabrera had seen his first-half penalty cancelled out by Terry Antonis’ equaliser for the club from Korea Republic.

The win means JDT move into second place in Group G, three points behind leaders Vissel Kobe from Japan, who won their opening games against Suwon and JDT last month, and Mora is looking for improvements from his players despite picking up the victory.

Johor Darul Ta'zim's Cabrera eyeing ACL knockout rounds

Iskandar Puteri: Gonzalo Cabrera insists Johor Darul Ta’zim can qualify for the 2020 AFC Champions League knockout rounds after the Malaysian champions defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings 2-1 in Group G on Tuesday. 

In what was a historic night for JDT as they played their maiden AFC Champions League game at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Cabrera opened the scoring from the spot in the 13th minute to the delight of the more than 25,000 in attendance.

The Korean side levelled after the interval through Terry Antonis but the hosts would not be denied a famous victory as Brazilian Mauricio headed home the winner with 17 minutes to play to ensure JDT picked up their first points of the campaign.
