Analysis: JDT well worthy of landmark win

Iskandar Puteri: Johor Darul Ta’zim created another piece of history on Tuesday as the Malaysian champions defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings to win their maiden AFC Champions League game at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. 

The Korean heavyweights may have dominated possession with more than 61%, but JDT again showed that they are a match for anyone on the Continent on home soil as the 2-1 win moved them to second in Group G and left their opponents bottom and still seeking their first points of the campaign.

Iskandar Puteri: A late goal from defender Mauricio sealed all three points for Johor Darul Ta’zim on Tuesday as the Malaysian champions notched up a 2-1 win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings in their first-ever AFC Champions League clash at the new Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

The Brazilian’s header 17 minutes from time secured all three points for JDT in the Group G meeting after Gonzalo Cabrera had seen his first-half penalty for the home side cancelled out by Terry Antonis’ long range strike six minutes into the second half.

Johor Darul Ta'zim's Cabrera eyeing ACL knockout rounds

Iskandar Puteri: Gonzalo Cabrera insists Johor Darul Ta’zim can qualify for the 2020 AFC Champions League knockout rounds after the Malaysian champions defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings 2-1 in Group G on Tuesday. 

In what was a historic night for JDT as they played their maiden AFC Champions League game at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Cabrera opened the scoring from the spot in the 13th minute to the delight of the more than 25,000 in attendance.

The Korean side levelled after the interval through Terry Antonis but the hosts would not be denied a famous victory as Brazilian Mauricio headed home the winner with 17 minutes to play to ensure JDT picked up their first points of the campaign.

We need to be more clinical, says Johor Darul Ta'zim's Mora

Iskandar Puteri: Johor Darul Ta’zim head coach Benjamin Mora called on his team to sharpen up their finishing skills after a 2-1 win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings on Tuesday gave the Malaysian champions their first win in the 2020 AFC Champions League.

Brazilian defender Mauricio headed home the winner 17 minutes from time for the Southern Tigers after Gonzalo Cabrera had seen his first-half penalty cancelled out by Terry Antonis’ equaliser for the club from Korea Republic.

The win means JDT move into second place in Group G, three points behind leaders Vissel Kobe from Japan, who won their opening games against Suwon and JDT last month, and Mora is looking for improvements from his players despite picking up the victory.

Sydney: Han Kyo-won scored a minute from time to earn 10-man Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC on Wednesday as the two-time AFC Champions League winners fought back to take a point from their Group H meeting at Jubilee Oval.

Sydney looked set to claim a famous win when Adam Le Fondre converted from the penalty spot 13 minutes from time to put the home side in front, but Han reacted quickest after Murilo’s shot came back off the post to secure a draw for Jose Morais’ side.

Ulsan Hyundai sign Lee Chung-yong

Ulsan: Lee Chung-yong will make his return to K League 1 after signing with Ulsan Hyundai FC, the club announced on Wednesday. 

Lee, who began his career with FC Seoul in 2004, moved to English Premier League side Bolton Wanderers in 2009 before transferring to Crystal Palace six years later.

In 2018, the 31-year-old winger signed with VfL Bochum, and now makes his return to Korea Republic's top flight.

East Zone teams agree to new dates

Kuala Lumpur: Representatives of the East Zone Member Associations (MA) with competing teams in the AFC Champions League 2020 have agreed to extend the dates of the knock-out rounds to allow for more time to complete the disrupted Group Stage fixtures.

Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it was agreed that Group matches scheduled for March and April which cannot be played, will be moved to May 19-20 - Match Day (MD3), May 26-27 (MD4), June 16-17 (MD5) and June 23-24 (MD6).

Where matches have been agreed between the two clubs, then the matches will go ahead as planned, if agreed by other stakeholders. A full list of fixtures will be confirmed between the MAs and the Clubs by March 16, 2020.
