Debutants Nassaji Mazandaran make Rahmati proud

Pune: Nassaji Mazandaran head coach Sayyed Mehdi Rahmati hailed his players after the Islamic Republic of Iran club marked their AFC Champions League™ debut with a 2-0 win over India's Mumbai City on Monday.

Goals from Ehsan Hosseini and Mohammadreza Azadi earned Rahmati's side a win which sees them occupying the Group D top spot after two-time champions Al Hilal SFC of Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan's Navbahor played to a 1-1 draw in the group's other fixture on Monday.

Pune: AFC Champions League™ debutants Nassaji Mazandaran made a winning start to their Group D campaign on Monday as goals from Ehsan Hosseini and Mohammadreza Azadi earned Mehdi Rahmati’s side a 2-0 victory over Mumbai City in Pune.

Hosseini’s cool close-range finish put the Iranian side in front in the 34th minute and Azadi made sure the Hazfi Cup holders took all three points back to the Islamic Republic of Iran with a strike from inside the six-yard box in the 62nd minute.

Riyadh: Ali Al Bulayhi’s late header rescued a point for Al Hilal against Navbahor in the Uzbek side’s debut in the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 Group D at King Fahd International Stadium on Monday.

The Saudis dominated possession throughout the first half but chances were few and far between at both ends, with Navbahor remaining compact and Al Hilal struggling to break them down.

Doha: Qatar’s Al Sadd SC and Sharjah FC of the United Arab Emirates settled for a goalless draw in Group B of the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Monday

Al Sadd were the better side but Baghdad Bounedjah’s missed penalty in the second half cost them dearly as Sharjah grabbed a valuable point.

Amman: A late Zafarmurod Abdurahmatov strike handed FC Nasaf a valuable 1-0 win over Jordan’s Al Faisaly in Group B of the AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 at Amman International Stadium on Monday.

The two sides had faced each other in the AFC Cup 2011 Round of 16, with Nasaf winning 2-1, going on to win the tournament.

Jeddah: Two-time AFC Champions League™ winners Al Ittihad made a winning return to the competition on Monday as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side cruised to a 3-0 win over Uzbekistan’s AGMK as Brazilian forward Romarinho scored twice in the Group C meeting in Jeddah.

Al Ittihad, the only club to win the back-to-back titles since the AFC Champions League was launched in 2002, are appearing in the Group Stage of the continental championship for the first time since 2015 and secured a statement win against Mirdjalol Qasimov’s side.

Arbil: Iraq’s Air Force Club and Islamic Republic of Iran’s Sepahan FC played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening AFC Champions League™ 2023/24 Group C match at the Franso Hariri Stadium on Monday.

An 89th minute equaliser from Ali Jasim, who had also scored to give Air Force Club an initial lead, meant that the first ever meeting between the two clubs in the AFC Champions League ended in a stalemate.
