Group I: Kawasaki Frontale defeat Guangzhou

Johor Bahru: Kei Chinen’s solitary goal earned Kawasaki Frontale a 1-0 win over Guangzhou FC at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Bahru on Saturday but it was not enough to keep the J1 League champions alive in the AFC Champions League™ 2022 as Johor Darul Ta’zim won Group I.

Yu Kobayashi’s perfectly weighted ball into Chinen's path allowed the forward to turn the Guangzhou defence before slipping his shot beyond Zhang Jihao to give the Japanese side a 14th minute lead.
 
Toru Oniki’s side pressed to increase their lead but found a determined Guangzhou defence in their way, but it mattered little as JDT’s dramatic late 2-1 win over Ulsan Hyundai in the other Group I game meant the Malaysian sifr advanced to the Round of 16.

Group I: Johor Darul Ta'zim edge Ulsan Hyundai to seal historic Round of 16 berth

Johor Bahru: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) added a brand-new chapter to their history-making AFC Champions League™ 2022 season by clinching their first-ever Round of 16 berth after battling to a last gasp 2-1 victory against Ulsan Hyundai FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Saturday.

With nothing less than three points securing their passage from Group I, the Southern Tigers displayed remarkable resolve to become the first Malaysian club to reach the Round of 16 since the start of the AFC Champions League™ era.
