Milojevic, Ali accept Al Wasl-Al Rayyan stalemate

Dubai: Al Wasl FC’s Milos Milojevic and Younes Ali of Al Rayyan SC were satisfied after their teams played to a 1-1 draw in their AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 clash on Monday.

Milojevic admitted the stalemate was a fair result despite Al Wasl being five minutes away from achieving a win that would have sealed their knockout stage spot.

Garrido hails Persepolis’ indomitable spirit

Doha: Juan Carlos Garrido was extremely proud after Persepolis FC revived their AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 knockout stage hopes with a 2-1 win against Iraq’s Al Shorta on Monday.

The Islamic Republic of Iran side showed grit and determination to defeat Al Shorta, drawing level in the 89th minute and then proceeding to score the winner through Giorgi Gvelesiani deep in stoppage time to move up to six points with two matches remaining.

Riyadh: Adam Ounas scored from the penalty spot in the ninth minute of time added on at the end of the second half as Al Sadd SC edged Al Nassr Club 2-1 to book their AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 knockout stage on Monday.

The win took Qatar’s Al Sadd up to 12 points with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, who are already through, one ahead after suffering the first defeat of their campaign.

Jeddah: Al Ahli were denied a sixth consecutive win in the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 on Monday with Ivan Toney scoring twice from the penalty spot to earn the hosts a 2-2 draw with Islamic Republic of Iran's Esteghlal, who played out the closing stages with 10 men.

The Englishman cancelled out Raphael Silva’s 42nd minute opener for Esteghlal before equalising again four minutes from time after Mohammad Hossein Eslami had restored the lead for the club from Tehran in the 52nd minute.

Eslami was sent off in the 81st minute for a foul on Saad Yaslam and Esteghlal had to survive a frantic finish that also saw Feras Al Brikan’s injury time strike for the home side ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

Al Ahli went into the game having already confirmed their progress to the last 16 and the draw takes Matthias Jaissle’s side onto 16 points from six games while Esteghlal move on to five points with two matches remaining.

Doha: Giorgi Gvelesiani’s late penalty earned Persepolis their first win in the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2024/25 on Monday as the Iranian side launched a late fight back to hand Al Shorta from Iraq a 2-1 defeat in Doha in the most dramatic fashion.

Mohanad Ali’s 19th minute lob looked like it was going to earn Al Shorta their first win in the competition but Oston Urunov’s strike into the corner pulled Persepolis level and Gvelesiani won the game, but only after Al Shorta’s Mahmoud Al Mawas had missed a spot-kick of his own.

The result at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium moves Persepolis onto six points from six games with two matches remaining while Al Shorta stayed on two points and with their hopes of advancing dwindling.
