Abdel Azim pleased with Dhofar’s dominance against Al Jazeera

Salalah: Dhofar Club head coach Mohamed Abdel Azim expressed his joy with his side’s performance in their 1-0 victory against Jordan's Al Jazeera in their 2020 AFC Cup Group C match on Tuesday.

A second-half penalty converted by Abdulaziz Al Muqbali gave Oman side Dhofar the three points at the Salalah Stadium.

Salalah: Abdulaziz Al Muqbali’s second-half strike was the difference as Dhofar Club defeated Jordan’s Al Jazeera 1-0 in Matchday One of the 2020 AFC Cup Group C on Tuesday.

This was Dhofar’s fourth AFC Cup campaign, having appeared in the inaugural edition in 2004, then in 2007 and 2013. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera have impressed in the competition in recent years, reaching the West Zonal Final in 2018 and 2019.

Manama: Kuwait’s Qadsia SC got their 2020 AFC Cup to a winning start, edging out Bahrain’s Riffa SC 2-1 in the opening match of Group C on Tuesday.

The Kuwaitis came out of the blocks racing with Abullah Mawi hitting the woodwork inside eight minutes. The midfielder rose highest to head Oday Dabbagh’s free-kick, beating the goalkeeper but was denied by the post.

Mahdi Darwish responded for the hosts, drilling an angled effort in an attempt to beat goalkeeper Khalid Al Rashidi at his near post, but the Qadsia custodian was alert and made a fine save in the 18th minute.

Beirut: Al Ahed FC head coach Bassem Marmar said his players gave an exceptional second half performance to edge Hilal Alquds 2-1 in their 2020 AFC Cup Group A tie at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium on Monday.

The AFC Cup defending champions found themselves behind after only 15 minutes as Fayeq Mahamid gave the visitors the lead but Tarek El Ali and Ahmed Zreik scored in the second half to give Al Ahed their first win of the year.

‘Machine-like’ Bali United's strength showed, says Platje

Bali: Melvin Platje believes that Bali United displayed their true strength by coming from a goal down to defeat Vietnam’s Than Quang Ninh 4-1 as they got their 2020 AFC Cup Group G campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday. 

Than Quang Ninh were reduced to 10 men early on at Bali’s Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium but the hosts fell behind to Jamaican Jeremie Lynch’s goal and went into the interval trailing despite their man advantage.

But the Indonesian champions came out firing after the restart with Rahmat Syamsuddin equalising almost immediately, before Platje netted a fine volley and a superb curling effort into the top corner either side of an Ilija Spasojevic penalty to complete a resounding win.

Kuwait SC must improve, says head coach Nassar

Kuwait City: Kuwait SC may have opened their 2020 AFC Cup campaign with a win but head coach Waleed Nassar said his side must improve if they are to enjoy an extended run in the competition.

Abdullah Al Buraiki’s free-kick secured a 1-0 win against Lebanon’s Al Ansar in their Group B opener on Monday but Nassar said he wasn’t completely satisfied with the performance of the three-time champions.

Group H - MD1: Tampines Rovers FC 2-1 PSM Makassar 

Singapore: Singapore’s Tampines Rovers held off a fast-finishing PSM Makassar of Indonesia to win their 2020 AFC Cup Group H match 2-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday.

Goals to Jordan Webb and Boris Kopitovic had the hosts cruising at 2-0 up with just under half an hour remaining, but PSM Makassar captain Ferdinand Sinaga’s volley ensured a tense finish.

The visitors fought hard for an equaliser, but the late sending off of Serif Hasic ended their challenge, as the 2019 Singapore Cup winners claimed all three points.

The win puts Tampines Rovers second on the group table, behind Kaya FC-Iloilo, who beat Shan United 2-0 earlier on Wednesday.
