Amman: Al Faisaly comfortably defeated Al Ramtha 3-0 in the playoff to lift the Jordan League crown for a record 31st time on Sunday.
The Jordan League went down to the playoff after both Al Faisaly and Ramtha were tied on 51 points from 22 matches.
The defeat was a big blow for Al Ramtha who were seeking to emerge from the shadow of giants Al Faisaly and Al Wehdat to secure their first league title in 30 years. But the brilliant show of Al Faisaly coupled with their own weakness at the front meant they have to wait further to land the domestic title the last time they won in 1982.
Bahaa Abdel Rahman opened the account for Al Faisaly in the 16th minute to dictate the proceedings. Al Ramtha had a golden opportunity to come back into the match when they were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute but Hamza Al Dardour missed the chance and Ramtha never recovered from the shock.
Ra’ed Al Nawateer scored Al Faisaly's second in front of the 15,000 crowd at the Amman International Stadium followed by Ahmed Hayel’s 90th minute strike helping Al Faisaly successfully defend their crown.
The win may cost Al Faisaly’s AFC Cup aspiration as they have only two days to prepare for a crucial tie against Oman’s Al Suwaiq as the Group A leaders still are no certain qualifiers for the last 16. Al Faisaly at least have to earn a point against Al Suwaiq on Wednesday to progress as failing to do so and a win for Al Qadsia in another Group A match means Al Faisaly have to be content with only domestic glory.
