Muscat: Fanja won the Oman Professional League in their final match of the campaign after claiming a 2-0 triumph over closest challengers Al Suwaiq at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
Both sides entered Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash level on points but, with Fanja in possession of a far superior goal difference, they knew anything other than defeat would be enough to seal the title.
But, just for good measure, they produced a clinical performance with defender Mohammed Al Musalami handing them the lead six minutes before the half-hour mark with a stunning freekick.
And in the 71st minute, Abdul Rahman Al Ghassani doubled the hosts’ tally with a fine individual effort, which proved enough to seal the win, as well as the league title with a three-point margin over their opponents.
The triumph also secured Fanja’s return to the summit of Omani football for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign, which was followed by three consecutive runners-up finishes.
Fanja will now turn their attentions to the AFC Cup, where they are currently bottom of Group D with one point from four games, with two match-days remaining.
They are next in action on Wednesday when they entertain Syria’s Al Jaish at the Seeb Sports Complex, having suffered a 1-0 defeat in their previous meeting back in February.
