Game plan key to success, says Sabah’s Ong

Bali: Sabah’s game plan proved highly effective as they secured their second straight AFC Cup™ 2023/2024 win, beating Indonesia’s PSM Makassar 5-0 in Thursday’s meeting at Captain 1 Wayan Dipta Stadium.

The win took Sabah to the top of Group H, three points ahead of Singapore’s Hougang United and Vietnam’s Hai Phong FC with a healthy goal difference to boot, much to the delight of head coach Ong Kim Swee.

Estama hails Taichung’s perseverance

Ulaanbaatar: Taichung Futuro’s Benchy Estama praised his teammates’ tenacity following their 2-0 win over Mongolia’s FC Ulaanbaatar in Group I of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 on Thursday.

Shohei Yokoyama and Hsu Heng-Pin were on target for Taichung, who lead the standings with maximum points and three ahead of Ulaanbaatar.

Macarthur's Sterjovski harbours title ambitions

Leumeah: Australia’s Macarthur FC produced one of the most impressive performances in the AFC Cup™ 2023/2024 so far on Thursday and head coach Mile Sterjovski is hoping it’s another step towards glory.

The Bulls produced a dominant display that saw them beat Dynamic Herb Cebu of Philippines 8-2 with six different goalscorers, including French forward Valere Germain who got a brace.

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr had to settle for a  point in their second match in Group E of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after a 1-1 draw with FC Ravshan at the Multi-Functional Stadium on Thursday.

The result leaves Altyn Asyr rooted at the bottom of the table with just a point with Ravshan second on two points, two behind leaders FK Abdysh-Ata-Kant of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Ashgabat: Turkmenistan’s FC Merw put another point on the board in their second match in Group E of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after a 1-1 draw with Abhysh-Ata Kant at the Multi-Functional Stadium on Thursday.

The opening exchanges belonged to the hosts. Merw’s early pressure came down the channels, where both Musa Nurnazarow and Igor Sekov were keen to get on the ball and drive at the defence.

Group H: PSM Makassar (IDN) 0-5 Sabah FC (MAS)

Bali: Sabah FC of Malaysia continued their winning start in Group H of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 on Thursday, sweeping Indonesia’s PSM Makassar aside 5-0.

Darren Lok and Gabriel Peres opened the scoring for Sabah in the first half at Captain 1 Wayan Dipta Stadium, before further strikes from Lok, Stuart Wilkin and Farhan Roslan in the second period wrapped up a comprehensive three points.
 
The victory was Sabah’s second in this year’s competition after they beat Singaporean outfit Hougang United FC 3-1 on Matchday One, while Makassar remain without a point at the foot of the table having also tasted defeat 3-0 in their opener away to Hai Phong FC in Vietnam.

Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC registered their second straight victory in Group F of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after they defeated Shan United FC of Myanmar 4-0 at National Olympic Stadium on Thursday.

Shintaro Shimizu bagged a hat-trick while substitute Lim Pisoth added the other goal for the Cambodian champions who maintained their perfect start to their AFC Cup campaign having won their first outing against the Philippines’ Dynamic Herb Cebu FC 3-0 a fortnight ago.

Group H: Hougang United (SGP) 2-1 Hai Phong FC (VIE)

Singapore: Hougang United of Singapore fought back to defeat Vietnam’s Hai Phong FC 2-1 in Group H of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday.

Dorde Maksimovic scored both goals, with the winner coming in the third minute of added time as Hougang revived their knockout stage hopes after having fallen 3-1 to Malaysia’s Sabah FC on Matchday One.
 
The defeat was a blow for Hai Phong, having opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over PSM Makassar.

Group I: FC Ulaanbaatar (MNG) 0-2 Taichung Futuro FC (TPE)

Ulaanbaatar: Chinese Taipei’s Taichung Futuro took a firm grip on Group I of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after a 2-0 win over FC Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia at the MFF Stadium on Thursday.

The victory took Taichung to a perfect six points, three clear of Ulaanbaatar. Chinese Taipei’s Tainan City FC and Must CPK of Macau - who both lost their opening games - complete the group but their face-off on Thursday has been postponed.
