Kuwait SC must improve, says head coach Nassar

Kuwait City: Kuwait SC may have opened their 2020 AFC Cup campaign with a win but head coach Waleed Nassar said his side must improve if they are to enjoy an extended run in the competition.

Abdullah Al Buraiki’s free-kick secured a 1-0 win against Lebanon’s Al Ansar in their Group B opener on Monday but Nassar said he wasn’t completely satisfied with the performance of the three-time champions.

Kuwait City: Three-time champions Kuwait SC got their 2020 AFC Cup off to a winning start, defeating Lebanon’s Al Ansar FC 1-0 in the first Group B tie on Monday.

The hosts came into their opening Group B encounter with an eye on maintaining their dominant form against Lebanese sides in the AFC Cup, having won six of their previous eight matches against opponents from Lebanon.

Amman: Syria’s Al Wathba earned a valuable point on their AFC Cup debut, holding Jordan’s Al Faisaly to a 0-0 draw on Matchday One of Group B on Monday.

Becoming the seventh different Syrian team to feature in the AFC Cup, Al Wathba knew a tough challenge awaited them against Jordanian powerhouse Al Faisaly at the Amman International Stadium.

The hosts came racing out of the blocks as they looked to manifest their superiority against the debutants. Within two minutes, Polish forward Lukasz Gikiewicz was through on goal following Ehsan Haddad’s cross, but Al Wathba goalkeeper Hussain Rahal stepped out and smothered the ball.

Beirut: Al Ahed FC head coach Bassem Marmar said his players gave an exceptional second half performance to edge Hilal Alquds 2-1 in their 2020 AFC Cup Group A tie at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium on Monday.

The AFC Cup defending champions found themselves behind after only 15 minutes as Fayeq Mahamid gave the visitors the lead but Tarek El Ali and Ahmed Zreik scored in the second half to give Al Ahed their first win of the year.

Manama: Kuwait’s Qadsia SC got their 2020 AFC Cup to a winning start, edging out Bahrain’s Riffa SC 2-1 in the opening match of Group C on Tuesday.

The Kuwaitis came out of the blocks racing with Abullah Mawi hitting the woodwork inside eight minutes. The midfielder rose highest to head Oday Dabbagh’s free-kick, beating the goalkeeper but was denied by the post.

Mahdi Darwish responded for the hosts, drilling an angled effort in an attempt to beat goalkeeper Khalid Al Rashidi at his near post, but the Qadsia custodian was alert and made a fine save in the 18th minute.

Goran Jerkovic gave Lao the lead on 15 minutes but his effort was cancelled out in the 39th minute by Hougang’s Charlie Machell before Plazibat scored twice in the second half to ensure victory.

Bali: Melvin Platje scored a second half brace as Bali United bounced back from going a goal down to hand 10-man Than Quang Ninh a 4-1 defeat on Tuesday as the Indonesians made a winning start to their 2020 AFC Cup campaign.

Jeremie Lynch had given Than Quang Ninh the lead after Andre Fagan’s early sending off for the Vietnamese visitors, only for Bali to rally in the second half with four unanswered goals to earn Emral Abus’s side a comprehensive win to open their account in Group G.
