Katanec wants Uzbekistan to aim for perfect finish

Vientiane: Their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 destiny is back in their hands and head coach Srecko Katanec has challenged his Uzbekistan side to aim for a perfect 12 points from their remaining Group A matches.

Abbosbek Fayzullaev’s 44th minute strike earned the Central Asian side a 1-0 win against a resilient DPR Korea on Tuesday as Uzbekistan moved to 13 points, three behind leaders Islamic Republic of Iran but, crucially, three ahead of third-placed United Arab Emirates with the top two teams to earn automatic qualification to the FIFA World Cup 26.

Vientiane: Islamic Republic of Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei admitted to having mixed feelings following his side’s 3-2 win over DPR Korea in their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ - Road to 26 Group A clash on Thursday.

Iran’s fortitude was put to the test by a fighting DPR Korea before Ghalenoei’s side, who were reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute, took a huge step towards qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the tactician admitting that some important lessons were learnt.

Vientiane: Islamic Republic of Iran staved off a fightback to secure a 3-2 win over DPR Korea in their AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 Group A tie at Lao National Stadium KM 16 on Thursday.

It was an eventful match for Mehdi Taremi who created all three Iran goals but also scored on own goal before missing a penalty as his side, who were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute, took a giant step towards the FIFA World Cup 2026 with 13 points at the halfway stage.

Santo Domingo: DPR Korea defeated Spain 4-3 on penalties after the final finished 1-1 to lift the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Dominican Republic 2024 title at the Felix Sanchez Stadium on Sunday.

The AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup™ champions faced their greatest challenge yet, overcoming a second half deficit to force spot-kicks, where they emerged superior to win their record third U-17 Women’s World Cup crown, having also emerged champions in 2006 and 2016.

The triumph completed an impressive double, with DPR Korea having won the FIFA U-20 Women's World Colombia 2024 title in September, the second time the East Asians have lifted both trophies in the same year.

Both are the only teams to have won the title twice - DPR Korea lifting the trophy in 2006 and 2016 while Spain are back-to-back defending champions.
