Australia great Wilkinson calls time on career

Sydney: AFC Asian Cup-winning defender and former Australia international Alex Wilkinson has retired from professional football, his club Sydney FC confirmed on Thursday.

The 38-year-old, part of the Socceroos squad that claimed the AFC Asian Cup™ on home soil in 2015, also won five A-League Premierships during stints with Central Coast Mariners and Sydney as well as two K-League titles with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in a career that spanned more than two decades.

Nigeria stun Argentina, Brazil stay on track

San Juan: Nigeria defeated hosts Argentina 2-0 to advance to the FIFA U20 World Cup 2023 quarter-finals on Wednesday. 

The defeat dashed Argentina's hopes of lifting the title for a record-extending seventh time, with Nigeria to face the winners of Thursday's Round of 16 tie between Ecuador and Korea Republic.

Tehran: Captain Omid Alishah scored in the 25th minute of extra time as Persepolis FC edged Esteghlal FC 2-1 at the Azadi Stadium to lift the 2023 Hazfi Cup on Wednesday. 

Having already won the 2022-23 Iran Pro League title and the Super Cup, Persepolis lifted the Hazfi Cup for a record-equalling seventh time to crown a superb season.

Al Foutoua end 32-year wait for Syrian Premier League crown

Damascus: Al Foutoua clinched the Syrian Premier League title with a match to spare following their 4-1 win over Al Majd on Tuesday.

Forward Alaa Al Dali scored twice to lead the Deir ez-Zor-based side to their third league title with their last win dating back 32 years ago when they clinched consecutive crowns in the 1990-91 seasons.
