Amman: Al Faisaly won the season-opening Jordan Shield by defeating archrivals Shabab Al Ordun 1-0 in the final on Sunday.
The win proved to be the perfect tribute to their late goalkeeper Zapen Al Khawaldeh who died in a tragic road mishap last week after helping his side defeat Kufer Soom in the semi-finals en route to the final.
The only goal of the match was scored by Jordanian international Hasoona Al Shaikh with just two minutes left on the clock.
This was Al Faisaly’s seventh Jordan Shield win and should put the former AFC Cup winners in the right frame of mind for the league, which kicks off after Ramadan.
Al Khawaldeh represented Al Faisaly in 2005 and 2006 when the Jordanian giants lifted the coveted AFC Cup crown. He was also part of the team when they reached the final in 2007 and eventually lost to Shabab Al Ordun.
