Coach education is one of the key technical pillars of the AFC in raising the quality of football in the Member Associations, especially in the development of players and football at all levels.
Coach Education in Asia - The Aim
“To improve the level of coaching through progressive education and practical experience, and as a result, develop better players, improve the quality of teams, raise the standard of football throughout the game in Asia, and increase the chances of success, in both club and national competitions.”
Coach Education Programmes
• The AFC Coaching Convention
Introduced in 2017, the AFC Coaching Convention promotes a progressive approach to adult education by focusing on the training of the individual’s core competences and by encouraging his/her self-reliance, reflection, creativity, problem solving and independent thinking.
Through the AFC Coaching Convention, the Member Associations will be responsible for their coach education programmes that includes the issuance of the AFC B, A and Pro diploma and coaching licenses but with the support, guidance and implementation of AFC’s Coaching Convention Regulations and Guidelines. AFC also approves the tutors and advises on teaching method and programme delivery.
• Coach Education Conference
AFC is directly involved in further education and gathers the technical directors and head of coach education of the Member Associations to discuss coach education, reflect on developments, recognise best practices and propose new ideas.
• Coach Education Workshop
A regional workshop for MA coach education tutors focusing on the methodology of delivering theoretical sessions and practical sessions as well as conducting assessments in coaching courses.
• Specialist Courses
The AFC provides specialist courses for goalkeeping coaches and fitness coaches; and organises courses for goalkeeping coaching tutors and fitness coaching tutors.
• National Coaches Conference (Men & Women)
The conference aims to analyze and reflect on the AFC Asian Cup and AFC Women’s Asian Cup from a technical perspective with reference to the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup, respectively.
• Elite Club Coaches Forum
An annual gathering of top club coaches in Asia to discuss technical issues and development of club football in Asia.
• Coaches Circle
An AFC Technical Publication that features technical articles, interviews of successful and upcoming coaches, as well as AFC events.
• Technical Reports
In the competitions of the AFC, a Technical Study Group (TSG) is formed to gather not only the technical and tactical trends from the matches but also the teams’ preparation leading to competition, among others. The Technical Report is published on the AFC website for easy access of the technicians responsible for the development of coaches and players.
