Osaka: Korea Republic’s Ji So-yun is back in familiar surroundings at the AFC Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 qualifiers in Osaka, but the former INAC Kobe Leonessa midfielder is focused on football and not reunions on her return to Japan.
Chelsea’s Ji helped Korea Republic earn a 1-1 draw in their opening game against DPR Korea on Monday.
And the 25-year-old and her team-mates will be back in action on Wednesday against hosts Japan.
“I have many friends in the Japan team, but I didn’t come here to meet up with them – I’m here to play,” said Ji.
“I’m disappointed that we couldn’t win, but I think the fact that we were able to take a point from the game means we can continue with a good atmosphere in the camp.”
Ji joined Chelsea from INAC Kobe Leonessa in 2013, and last year scored the goals that won the Women’s Super League and FA Cup in England.
“She played as well as she always does,” said Korea Republic coach Yoon Duk-yeo following the DPR Korea draw.
“She demonstrated a world class level tonight, and I think she still has more to show and the potential to be an even better player.”
Korea Republic are seeking a first-ever appearance at the Olympic Game and need to finish inside the top two of the six-team tournament in Osaka to qualify.
Yoon’s side, though, will next face a Japan side looking to bounce back from Monday’s 3-1 opening defeat by Australia.
“There are many good players in Japan, too, so now I just have to prepare properly and hopefully we can put on a good game for everyone,” added 2013 AFC Women’s Player of the Year Ji.
“I want to show the Japanese fans that in Korea there are players like Ji So-yun. I will make sure to do all I can to help the team win.
“The fact Japan are hosts doesn’t affect us. We will prepare to play exactly as we have been working on in training.
“But the Asian game is strong and I think any team here can qualify. In order to go to Rio we have to fight with all of our strength.”
