Kuwait City: Kuwait SC will go into Wednesday’s final AFC Cup Group D clash with Riffa boosted by the fact that they secured the 2014/15 Kuwait Premier League title following a 2-0 victory over Al Sulaibikhat on the final day of the season.
Khaled Ajab opened the scoring on the quarter-of-the-hour-mark of Saturday’s Round 26 clash before Tunisian midfielder Chadi Hammami settled the nerves with Kuwait SC’s second with a minute of the match left to play.
The victory took Kuwait SC’s points tally to 66 and while Al Arabi hammered Al Tadamon 7-0 in their final match to end the campaign with the same total, it was KSC that took the title on account of their better head-to-head record against the 16-time champions.
Kuwait SC will now turn their attentions to their continental campaign with newly-crowned Kuwaiti champions looking to add a fourth AFC Cup to their 12th Kuwait league title.
With passage to the 2015 AFC Round of 16 already secured, Kuwait SC will round off their group stage campaign when they travel to Bahrain to face third-place Riffa on Wednesday, needing a victory in Manama coupled with a Al Jaish failing to defeat bottom-of-the-table Nejmeh in Lebanon if they are to advance as Group D winners ahead of the Syrians, who currently hold pole position in the standings.
