Bayer Leverkusen are fearing the worst following an ankle injury Robbie Kruse sustained in Australia’s Asian Cup final victory over Korea Republic, with the German side bracing themselves for the winger to miss the rest of the season.
Kruse, who started five matches and scored against Oman during the Socceroos’ victorious continental campaign, had to be substituted 70 minutes into Saturday’s thrilling showdown in Sydney with the injury to the former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory winger the undisputed low point on a day of celebration for the host nation.
And while the 26-year-old was able to join his teammates for the trophy presentation after their extra-time win over the Koreans, the prognosis for Kruse is not looking positive.
"In Saturday’s Asian Cup final against Korea Republic, won 2-1 by the Socceroos, the 26-year-old suffered serious ligament damage in his left ankle," reported Bayer Leverkusen’s official website.
“A full diagnosis of the injury is expected on Monday. The striker will undergo a thorough medical examination in Australia. That will decide what happens next and whether the Kruse returns to Leverkusen or is treated back home in Australia first.”
