The forward was appointed captain of The Azkals in 2016, leading the team to a 2-1 win over Tajikistan in March 2018 as Philippines clinched an AFC Asian Cup Finals berth for the first time. Younghusband, who was on English Premier League side Chelsea's books earlier in his career, first represented the Philippines in the 2005 SEA Games, scoring twice in a 4-2 defeat to Malaysia.
