Kuwait City: Al Qadsia defeated fellow AFC Cup 2013 quarter-finalists Kuwait Sports Club 3-1 to claim the Kuwait Super Cup with all four goals in Tuesday’s meeting between the Emir’s Cup winners and the Kuwait Premier League champions coming in extra-time.
After the regulation 90 minutes at the Ali Sabah Al Salem Stadium ended goalless Saleh Al Sheikh broke the deadlock, putting Al Qadsia 1-0 up six minutes into extra-time.
But the advantage was short-lived as Abdelhadi Khamis struck three minutes later to equalise for last season’s Kuwait league winners, who are also the defending AFC Cup champions.
But Qadsia were to turn the contest firmly in their favour with Fahad Al Ansari making it 2-1 in the 110th minute before star striker Bader Al Mutwa, who has scored nine times in seven matches during Qadsia’s run to the last eight of this year’s AFC Cup, sealed the win just three minutes later.
After adding the 2013/14 season opening Super Cup to the Emir’s Cup they won at the end of May Al Qadsia will be brimming with confidence ahead of the resumption of their quest for continental silverware, which continues on September 17 when they host the first leg of their 2013 AFC Cup quarter-final clash with Syria’s Al Shorta.
Kuwait SC, meanwhile, continue their mission for a record third AFC Cup title when the defending champions travel to the Maldives to take on New Radiant in the first leg of their last-eight clash also on September 17.
