Kuala Lumpur: AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh has stressed to coach instructors the importance of embracing what makes good educators apart from mastering the tactical and technical side of the game.
An AFC Coaching Instructors’ Refresher Course started in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur on Monday, with Roxburgh giving the welcoming address and also an introduction as to what lies ahead during the 11-day programme.
“Previously you were players and coaches but now you’re coach instructors or educators, which is a very specialised role,” said the Scotsman, a world-renowned football development specialist.
“You train coaches who in turn will train teams and players, so you need to master two aspects pertinent to the role – the principles of football and the principles of coach education.
“You have to be a master of the principles of the game such as mobility, improvisation, width, anticipation and many more. You have to very good on the tactical and technical side.
“On the other side of the coin, you have to be adept at the principles of coach education, or what makes for good educators or basically teachers, which in my opinion, is the most important profession because people have so many kinds of careers and professions because they have had good teachers.
“There were star players who when they became coaches, they couldn’t satisfactorily perform their new role because they hadn’t embraced the qualities of good educators. Therefore, you need to be good tacticians as well as good teachers to be excellent coach instructors.”
The course covers various modules such as those related to the AFC ‘C’ Coaching Certificate Course, integrity, fitness, goalkeeping, AFCAS (AFC Administration System) and more.
AFC Technical Division staff Mohamed Basir from Singapore and Jose Carpio of the Philippines are the instructors on the course which will run until June 11.
